W8-D4-Impostor

Description

This session uses the Impostor Party app to practice descriptive vocabulary, synonyms, and persuasive speaking. Students must provide one-word clues to describe a secret word while trying to identify the player (the Impostor) who doesn't know the word and is bluffing.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To develop strategic oral fluency through vocabulary association and persuasive discussion.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To expand topic-related vocabulary.
  • To practice speculation language (might, could, I think...).
  • To develop persuasive and defensive speaking skills.
  • To improve listening and inference skills.

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To activate interest and prepare students for a social deduction game.

Ask students if they have played "Among Us" or "Spyfall". Briefly explain that the goal is to think fast and be persuasive.

Explanation (6-8 minutes) • To ensure students clearly understand the game mechanics and language expectations.

The teacher explains the Rules: 1-Everyone sees a secret word (e.g., "Pizza") except one person or two who see "IMPOSTOR". 2-Each player says one related word as a clue (e.g., "Cheese," "Italian," "Round"). 3-The Impostor must listen carefully and say a word that "blends in" without knowing the secret. 4-The Trial: Everyone debates and votes on who the Impostor is.

Practice round (8-10 minutes) • To allow students to experience the game with support and clarify doubts.

Conduct one "Open Round" where the teacher acts as the Impostor. Model how to use adjectives and "bluff" using English.

Game! (30-32 minutes) • To promote rapid vocabulary recall and spontaneous speaking through repetition.

Teacher passes the device around for "Single Device Mode", so every student gets a role. English Only. Ensure all debates, accusations, and defenses are in English. Make sure they rotate roles and change the Impostor every round so everyone gets a turn to lie or detect.

Wrap-Up (3-5 minutes) • To lower energy gradually and reinforce positive participation.

Stop the game before energy drops. Ask: Which word was the hardest to describe? Who was the best at lying? Highlight 3-5 new vocabulary words or clever clues used during the session.
