Description

In this lesson, students will have the opportunity to discover vocabulary about films and book and will practice their new vocabulary by talking about books and films as well as listening to Actor! Author! a TV quiz program.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

flash them HO1 images one by one, but just quickly. Ask, do you know what these images are? Can you guess? Before showing them clearly, give the Instructions: Match the words from the box to the images on the left. nominate a student to do the first example:(student to come to the front and match the word to the image) G-cartoon. Pair up to check your answers. Nominate a student to come match up the words to the boxes, ask W/C whether they agree/disagree with the answers. Say the words and ask students to repeat them to practice: A: love story/romance B: thriller -weak sound C: horror -weak sound D: science fiction (abbreviated as sci-fi: model on board) E: comedy F: western -weak sound (see below) G: cartoon (Stress on second syllable) -weak sound: Ask students what the three words have in common?

Pre-Listening (10-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Instructions: Think of a film or book you know for each category. Write their names. Elicit one or two examples to get students started: Comedy: The hangover. Place students into pairs to make a list. Instructions: One pair reads out their names of films and books. The other pair must say what the category is. Put pairs into groups of 4. Instructions: Show HO3 with questions. A: Interview your partner about books and reading. B: Interview your partner about cinema. Take turns to ask questions. Pair Ss up and hand out HO3 by saying 'A', 'B' and giving the appropriate material. Nominate a students/students to summarize what their partner said.

While-Listening #1 (10-10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information listening tasks

CD 2.1 Listen to the beginning of the TV Programme Actor! Author! What are the rules? play track. Elicit what the rules are for the quiz. A: Each person takes a turn and chooses a category. Actor or Author. The presenter gives 4 clues about the person they guess who it is. CD2.2 Listen to the recording and try to guess the famous actor/author before Mike and Steph. 1: Johnny Depp 2: Dan Brown 3: J.K Rowling 4: Penelope Cruz FB: What information helped you guess?

While-Listening #2 (14-14 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference listening tasks

Instructions: Read through the information and check the vocabulary. Listen again (CD2.2) and underline the correct word(s). Give an example: 1: Actor: Johnny Depp He was born in Kentucky, USA in 1963.

Post-Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Nominate and elicit answers from students. Check whether whole class agrees.
