Main Aims

  • To enable students to accurately distinguish and use Past Continuous and Past Simple in narrative contexts.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To identify long vs short actions.
  • To describe interrupted actions clearly.
  • To avoid overusing Past Continuous.
  • To improve narrative clarity.

Procedure

Activation (25-30 minutes) • To activate storytelling skills and review the use of past simple and past continuous in context.

Project a sequence of 4-6 images (funny, random, or thematic). Ask students one by one to improvise a story about the image that is projected, and the next person continues the story until one gets to the end. After that, another student continues with the following image. Remind them to use both tenses: Past Continuous - to describe background actions ("The dog was barking...") Past Simple - for main or interrupting events ("...when the pizza fell on the floor.") Encourage feedback on creativity and correct tense use.

Vocabulary (13-15 minutes) • Provide vocabulary necessary to narrate emergency incidents clearly.

Vocabulary incident, injury report, sudden change, warning sign, stabilization period, X-ray image, behavior monitoring, bleeding control, breathing support, oxygen mask -Present each word with a short contextual example. -Quick clarification if needed. -Each student produces one original sentence. -Teacher reformulates only when meaning is unclear.

Presentation (38-40 minutes) • Help students understand the functional difference between background actions and completed events.

Teacher writes: -The team was monitoring the patient when the sudden change happened. -The dog barked while the vet was examining the wound. Ask: -Which action was longer? -Which action interrupted? -Which action is the main event? Highlight which one is which. Draw a simple timeline: _____________ (was monitoring) X (sudden change happened) Teacher projects the slide explaining the use of when and while in past continuous and past simple. Ask for some examples.

Controlled Practice (33-35 minutes) • Consolidate students' ability to choose between Past Continuous and Past Simple based on meaning.

Students work individually. Exercise 1: Choose the correct form: Past Simple or Past Continuous. 12-15 mixed items. Whole-class feedback focused on reasoning. Exercise 2: Choose the correct connector (while or when). 10 items. Whole-class feedback focused on reasoning.
