In this lesson students will practice reading for gist and specific information in the context of a magazine article about the problems of mothers who to return to work.

Abc Matching letters with paragraphs

Main Aims

  • To give students practice in reading for gist and specific information in the context of article about mothers who want toreturn to work

Subsidiary Aims

  • To review vocabulary related to the magazine article to clarify the meaning of difficult words the might block completing the task.

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson content and engage students

The teacher shows students pictures of working women and unemployed women . Then asks students 'do they have jobs' what are their jobs? Do women find jobs easily in Bursa? What are the problems might face unemployed women?

Pre-teach vocabulary • To introduce the vocabulary that students may need when they read

Pre-teach 'journalist' 'unemployed' 'benefit' . Highlight meaning by asking CCQs Drilling

Reading for gist (5-7 minutes) • To get students to skim the magazine article to find 'What the two women have in common'Students read the rest of the article and decide if the sentences are (T) or (F)

students read only the first paragraph and find out 'what do the two women have in common'

Reading for specific information (10-12 minutes) • To get students to scan the article to answer questions.

Set the task by telling students that this time they are going to read t and put the extracts' a-d' into the gaps 1-4 Students work in pairs to check each other's work when they finish Give feedback

Follow- up (3-5 minutes) • To check whether the students put the diary extracts a-d into the gaps 1-4 in the article

Students work in pairs and correct any possible incorrect answers by putting the letter of the correct sentence in the corresponding paragraph Giving feedback by the teacher

Free Practice (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Ss work in pairs and talk about the unemployment benefit ( line 15) Ss answer the question ' How much is unemployment benefit in your country? Ss answer the question ' Is there an employment problem in your country?
