Paria Hosseini Paria Hosseini

Paria Hosseini _ (( Past continuous))
Intermediate level

Description

In this lesson students are going to learn how to use past continuous tense to talk about actions that were in progress at a specific time in the past through PPP in the context of daily activities. The lesson starts with a talk about what we were doing at a specific time last night. It is followed by a discussion about past events with a focus on accuracy.

Materials

Abc SB ( American English File 2, third edition)
Abc visual aids ( Pictures with related concepts )

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of past continuous in the context of past events.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of past experiences. And also to make sure students don’t mistake (past continuous) with (simple past)

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The class will be started by a talk about what I was doing at 9 pm last night. It will be followed by asking students to tell the class what they were doing at that time.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

I will choose 3 of my students sentences to write in the correct past continuous form on the board to draw their attention to the verb form that I have used differently.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

I will draw a timeline on the board and ask the students some CCQs: Are the sentences about the past, present, or future? (Past). Was the action finished at that time? (No). Was it in progress at that moment? (Yes). I will elicit the structure from the students by asking about the role of the words and the way I have changed the verbs. sub + was/were + verb + ing. I will let them know about the use of was with I/he/she/it and were with you/we/they. I will explain the negative form (wasn’t / weren’t + verb ing) and the question form (Was/Were + subject + verb ing?). I will briefly mention that past continuous is often used together with simple past when a shorter action interrupts a longer action in progress.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Students are going to do gap filling task on page 120 in the grammar bank in 4 minutes individually. They will have 2 minutes to check their answers in pairs and then we will check the answers with the whole class.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

The students are going to be divided into groups of 3 or 4. They will have 8 minutes to talk about what they were doing at a specific time in the past and create a short story using past continuous. At the end, they are going to tell the class the most interesting story in their group. They will be monitored and feedback will be given at the end if needed.
