Materials
Main Aims
-
To develop students’ listening skills through gist, specific information, and detailed listening tasks.
Subsidiary Aims
-
To personalise the topic through a short communicative task.
Procedure (35-45 minutes)
T will show pictures of different animals and inventions from the book. T will ask: “How can animals inspire technology?” T will elicit ideas without correcting language unless necessary for meaning. Ss will discuss briefly with a partner. Ss will share ideas with the class. T will introduce the word biomimicry and briefly clarify meaning (without grammar discovery).
T will direct students to the TV guide section on the page. T will ask students to read the TV guide individually and predict what the programme will be about. T will ask: “What type of programme is it? Documentary? Science show?” Ss will read silently. Ss will compare predictions in pairs. Ss will share predictions with the class.
Ask students to match the pictures with their pairs (1-3 with a-c) before playing the audio. T will explain: “You are listening for general idea only. Do not try to understand every word.” T will play Audio 5.07 once. Ss will listen and check if their predictions are correct. T will conduct quick whole-class feedback.
T will ask students to read the questions before listening again. T will remind students to listen for key words. T will play the audio a second time. Ss will complete the task e individually. Ss will compare answers in pairs. T will check answers with the class and clarify if needed.
T will use Grouper.school to create random groups (students remain seated). T will distribute one innovation card to each group. T will explain the task clearly: “Your group has an animal and a problem. Create an invention inspired by that animal. Be ready to explain your idea.” Ss will discuss in groups. Ss will prepare a short explanation (2–3 sentences). T will monitor, support quieter students, and encourage participation. Selected groups will share their invention ideas with the class.
T will give brief content feedback on ideas. T will praise creative thinking and participation. T will ask: “Would you like to use biomimicry in real life? Why/Why not?” Ss will respond voluntarily.
