Description

In this lesson, students will practice listening for gist and detail in the context of "trusting your instincts."

  • To give some speaking practice to develop fluency
  • To learn vocabulary for talking about first impressions

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Ask students questions and (if more than 3 students) put in breakout rooms to discuss. Put questions on screen initially and check for understanding of phrase "trust your instincts." Put questions in chat. Can you think of anyone you've met that you instantly liked or disliked? Do you generally trust your instincts? Pre-Listening (5-6 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

While Listening #1 (5-6 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist listening tasks

While Listening #2 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed listening tasks

Have students listen a second time and try to answer the following questions. Show the questions on the screen first. Put google form link in chat. Put them in pairs to discuss answers before submitting. Review answers together. 1. Which job was advertised? another accountant 2. What did Hal think of the first person he saw? Why? He didn’t think he was right for the company. There wasn’t a particular reason, he just had a hunch. 3. Why does Malcom Gladwell's book, Blink, come up in the conversation? Because he writes about first impressions. 4. Does Gladwell believe we follow our instincts too often? No, he thinks we should go with our gut feelings more often. 5. Post Listening (12-15 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and practice set expressions

Begin with review of set expressions for talking about first impressions. Students will do matching exercise on google form. Class will review set expressions together. I made my mind up in about 10 seconds. I just had a hunch. There was just something about him. Can't put my finger on it, really. We should go with our gut feelings. Speaking practice: students will discuss their first impressions (from lead in) using the following prompt: Can you think of anyone you’ve met who you instantly liked or disliked? They will be asked to discuss one person using the provided language. Ss will be give 1-2 minutes to make notes.
