Description

In this lesson, students are going to listen to a man talking about whether too much choices are making us unhappy?

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide detailed listening practice using a text about Difficulty of choosing while having a lot of options

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a making decision in the context of buying things

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

First, the students are shown a picture of different kinds of jeans and asked which one of them they usually buy. Which color? And also, is it sometimes hard for them to choose the right one?

Pre-Reading/Listening (6-8 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

The students will be taught the following vocabularies used in the text: Dissatisfied - get stressed - study (n.) First, I will show them a picture, then I will ask what word they think suits it, and then I will give them the word.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (7-9 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

The students will listen to the audio file and will try to answer the following questions. Is too much choice making us unhappy? Does the speaker think the answer is yes or no?

While-Reading/Listening #2 (9-11 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Students will be asked to take a look at the questions of part C page 89 and will listen to the audio file again. They have to choose the correct option between a, b, or c while listening to the audio file, and then I will give them 1 minute to check their answers in pairs. Finally, I will ask them to provide reasons for their choice.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

I will divide the students into 5 groups and give each group one option to talk about. I want them to see if the place contains a lot of options and whether it is a good or bad thing.
