A receptive skills (listening) lesson centered on the topic of shopping malls, focusing on identifying specific information and locations.

Main Aims

  • By the end of the lesson, Ss will have developed listening skills through practice in listening for specific information and detail in the context of an information desk in a shopping mall.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • to get Ss interested in the topic

T shows a slide of the Cevahir shopping mall and asks Ss if lead-in questions. e.g. "What is this place?", "Do you like shopping here?"

Pre-Listening 1 (4-6 minutes) • to prepare Ss to listen through a review of ordinal numbers & their pronunciation

T will provide a link and a QR code to a matching game on WorldWall and asks the Ss to join and match the words and numbers (1st, first, 2nd, second, etc. ) T will show the numbers on the screen and drill the numbers and how their prnounced with the students.

Pre-Listening 2 - vocabulary (6-8 minutes) • to further prepare Ss to listen by clarifying some potentially blocking vocabulary to make the text more accessible: p 39 Listening Ex 1-2

T will ask Ss to match the words and the pictures first individually. T will ask Ss to check their answers in breakout rooms. T will play the audio 1.54 to help Ss check their answers.

While-listening 1 – specific information (6-8 minutes) • to provide Ss with practice in listening for specific information - Ex 3 (along with pictures/vocabulary from Ex 1)

T will elicit the situation of the dialogs so Ss will understand where the people are at the moment of the conversation by showing a man who is lost at a shopping mall. T will ask Ss where the man is and where he goes. T will share the list of the places Ss need to focus on and ask Ss to listen and write what place names they hear. Ss will check their answers in the breakout room

While-Listening 2-– detail (10-13 minutes) • to provide Ss with practice in listening for detail – Ex 4

T will elicit the phone does not accept coins by showing a picture of a public telephone and CCQ which one? Cards or Coins? T will share a table of the sentences and instructs the students to read the sentences for a minute. T will asks the students to listen to the auido and match the sentences with some places on the list If there is time, T will ask Ss if they need to listen to the auidio once more and if yes, T will play the audio again. T will share the AK

Post-Listening (8-10 minutes) • to allow for some personalisation & to provide Ss with practice in speaking for fluency – p 38 Speaking Ex 1

T will share 3 questions about shopping malls with Ss, send them to breakout rooms to discuss Ss will discusss the questions in groups T will get FB from Ss.
