Description

In this lesson, students learn to use the present continuous to talk about future plans and arrangements in the context of events like Comic Con. They practice pop culture vocabulary, read for context, focus on the meaning, form, and pronunciation of the target structure, and use it in speaking activities to talk about their own plans.

Materials

Main Aims

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist, scan, detailed, deduction and inference reading practice using a text about comic con in the context of Students will learn and practise pop culture vocabulary (actor, director, band, TV show, concert, artist), will develop reading for gist and specific information. They will improve speaking fluency through pair and group discussion.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To introduce the topic and get students engaged into the class.

The teacher shows pictures of Comic Con, people wearing costumes, movie actors and famous computer games. The teacher asks simple questions: What can you see? Do you like movies? Do you play video games? Do you like music concerts? Students discuss in pairs for 1–2 minutes. The teacher takes some answers from the class. Then ask: What do you think we will talk about today?

Exposure (4-5 minutes) • Students read a text and see the target language in context.

The teacher explains the new vocabulary with a simple CCQS to check the understanding of the word, meaning, and example, then gives students Cassie’s blog post. Set the Instructions: Read and find words about Comic Con. Students read silently and quickly in 1 minute to answer the question: Which words from the vocabulary does she use? ICQs: T: Are you writing or reading? S: Reading T: Alone or with a partner? S: Alone first Students compare answers in pairs. The teacher checks the answers with the class.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

The teacher: Now, please read it again carefully and answer. Read and tick, right or wrong, in front of the sentences. You have 4 mins. Then check their answers together. The teacher shows them the right answers.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language. Students notice the grammar and the teacher explains.

The teacher writes sentences from the text: Comic Con is coming this weekend. I’m bringing my camera. Are you going to Comic Con? Meaning: Teacher asks: Is Comic Con happening now?” Students: No Is it in the future? Yes Did she plan this before now? Yes So is this a plan? Yes The teacher underlines is coming/bringing/going. Students understand that the present continuous can be used for future plans. Form: Teacher writes structure: Subject + am/is/are + verb + ing Pronunciation: Teacher drills: I’m going She’s meeting We’re watching Focus on -ing sound.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • Students practice grammar with support. And to concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Students complete sentences with the present continuous. Students work alone first. Then check in pairs. The teacher checks the answers with the class. The teacher focuses on correct form.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language. Students use language to talk about real plans.

Students ask and answer: What are you doing this weekend? Are you going to the movies? Are you meeting friends? T can give them some keywords from the vocabulary. Students speak in pairs. The teacher monitors, listens, and writes down mistakes.

Feedback & Error Correction (4-5 minutes) • Correct mistakes and praise students.

Teacher writes mistakes heard: Ex: She going to a party I am go tomorrow Students correct together: Ex: She is going I am going Teacher praises good speaking.
