Main Aims

  • To provide language for students to speak about their activities during the previous weekend.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide practice of past simple in the context of previous weekend activities.
  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of previous weekend activities.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Greet and welcome students. Then show a slide that shows a woman juggling multiple items. The slide asks "Can you guess what I did last weekend?" This will pique their interest and engage the students in the lesson. Have the students take turns guessing. Call on potential students who may not be as engaged to encourage participation.

Exposure (10-13 minutes) • To provide students the language, lexis and sentence structure for the speaking tasks.

Transition to the next slide and remind students of last week's lesson when they discussed some activities that they did during the previous weekend. Explain that this slide will let them know what I did last weekend, therefore answering the question from the previous slide. Then, call on students to read the slide line by line for engagement and speaking practice. Call on potential students who may not be as engaged to encourage participation. Did you do anything fun last weekend? Talk about chores vs fun weekend activities. No, I did chores. ๐Ÿ˜ญ What chores did you do? I cleaned the bathroom. ๐Ÿšฝ I did the laundry. ๐Ÿงบ I washed my car ๐Ÿš™ I went grocery shopping ๐Ÿ›’๐Ÿ›๏ธ I studied for my class ๐Ÿ“– I cooked for my family ๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿฝโ€๐Ÿณ Turn to the next slide and have students read to discuss the CCQs. Let the students participate to make sure they understand the concept. Example: I cooked dinner last night. Is the action in the past? Yes Is the action finished? Yes Is it happening now? No What tense is this? Past Simple = Finished Time Next slide, Grammar Rules for Past Simple Have students read the slide one by one. Regular Verb Rule: Add โ€‘ed to the base form of the verb. Example: Clean + ed = Cleaned Irregular Verb Rule: Irregular verbs do not follow a fixed pattern. You must learn their special past forms. Examples Go --- Went Do --- Did In the next slide, help the students drill the pronunciation of the target language. This will help in mitigating the potential problems with the verb endings. Present and Past Simple verbs Clean Cleaned Wash Washed Cook Cooked Study Studied Do Did Go Went

Language Practice (8-10 minutes) • To facilitate practice and clarification of the target language.

Show the students the slide that introduces the language practice task. Have one of the students read the instructions. Practice Instructions: Work together in the breakout rooms to choose the best answer on the Google Form practice task. Time: 3 and a half minutes Afterwards, we will discuss the answers as a class. Put the Google Form on the chat and have them get started while they are transitioned to breakout rooms. Give students 3 1/2 minutes to discuss the questions with their peers. Visit the breakout rooms to monitors students discussions. After the breakout time has concluded, facilitate discussion and have students take turns reading the questions and answers. Answer any questions students may have from the practice.

Productive Task(s) (8-10 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice speaking skills.

Speaking Practice Ask the students to read the slide: Discuss with your classmates what you did last weekend Questions: Did you do anything fun last weekend? What chores did you do? Tell us the fun and boring activities that you did! Depending on the number of students. Either have them talk amongst themselves in the main room or breakout to discuss these questions. Monitor discussions to capture language mistakes for DEC.

Feedback and Error Correction (6-8 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

Point out students errors captured during the lesson and provide corrections. Thank the students, tell them how well they did and encourage them to keep practicing.
