Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of used to in the context of personal past habits and change

Subsidiary Aims

  • To develop accuracy and fluency through speaking practice comparing life in the past and now. To support pronunciation awareness . To build confidence and reduce L1 use through structured pair and group work.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (4-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Show a short video comparing then vs now (e.g., old phones, old school and parenting). Ss discuss differences: What has changed over time? Then Ss write 2 things that have changed in their lives (habits/routines/preferences). ICQs: How many changes? (2) Are they about past vs now? (Yes).

Exposure (4-5 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Teacher shares personal examples of changed habits/states using Simple Past + used to: I used to ride a bike to school.- I did not use to like fish.-I used to listen to Westlife. Ss listen and identify which habits/states are mentioned.

Highlighting (4-5 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Ss read a short text about the teacher. Ss underline the structure of used to. Elicit: What comes after used to? (base verb)-Is it past or present? (past)-Is it still true now? (no)

Clarification (7-8 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Elicit meaning, form, and usage of used to using a timeline. -CCQs:Did I do it in the past? (Yes) Do I do it now? (No) -Form: Aff: S + used to + V1 Neg: S + did not use to + V1 Q: Did + S + use to + V1? -Pronunciation: used to: Drill chorally and individually.

Controlled Practice (7-8 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Do exercise A and B on page 148 in Empower. Peer check answers. Fast finishers: write 2 question to ask their friends later using used to.

Semi-Controlled Practice (6-7 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Ss rewrite the sentences from the beginning of class about their changes using the target language Pair-share and ask follow-up questions. Speaking frame on board: I used to, but now I/but not anymore I did not use to, but now ---

Free Practice (8-9 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

In groups, Ss discuss life before and now (technology, school, family). Teacher monitors for errors and good language. Board 3 or 4 sentences from monitoring for error correction Whole-class feedback.
