In this lesson students will listen to a lecture about why and how people take selfies in the context to practice their listening for specific detail skills.

Main Aims

  • To provide detailed listening practice using a text about lecture of people´s reaction and why they take selfies in the context of cross culture understanding

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide review of taking selfies lexis in the context of cross culture understanding

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Ask the class to think about: How do they feel when they get their picture taken? Do you like taking pictures? Why Do students feel comfortable? Uncomfortable? What do students do to try to get a good photograph of themselves?

Pre-Reading/Listening (10-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Look at the photos and read the caption below. Answer the questions. 10 min Have students look at the photos and read the captions. Then have them read and answer the questions on their own. Have students then compare their answers with a partner. Ask students to share their predictions with the class

While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Why do people take selfies? Read the sentences below. Then listen and circle the reasons mentioned. 29 5–10 min Tell students to try to predict the answers before they listen. Each item has two correct answers. Check answers by playing the audio again. Ask students to check their predictions. Did anyone predict all four correct answers?

While-Reading/Listening #2 (16-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Read the information in the chart. Try to guess the answers. Then listen and write one or two words in each blank. 30 5–10 min As in B, students should try to predict the answers before they listen. Make sure students understand how the chart is set up; then play the audio once.

Post-Reading/Listening (10-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Discuss the questions in a group. 10–15 min Point out the Academic Skill to students. Read the information about concluding. Make sure that students understand that when you conclude, you first analyze facts and information that you have been presented with And then you form your own opinion based on that information.
