Description

In this lesson, Ss learn about using collocation in a reading text. The lesson starts with "find your match" activity, followed by a memory game and a pre-teaching stage to clarify meaning. Finally, read for specific information and get a personalized quiz to answer by mingling with different Ss about the topic of reading.

Main Aims

  • To provide Ss with extra practice on reading for specific information in the context of reading about different ways to relax

Subsidiary Aims

  • To introduce Ss to the most common verb-noun collocation in the context of reading about different ways people follow to relax

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

-Play a role that I am so tired and unable to teach, telling them that I have to go -Ask them to discuss in pairs what do I need to do? for 30 seconds -Give them the letters of the word to order and say -Show them a picture and ask CCQs to confirm the meaning

Teaching vocabulary: Common Verb-Noun Collocation (3-5 minutes) • To introduce the SS to the target language

-Distribute nouns and verbs in colored cards -Demo first on the board: do exercise -Ask them to mingle and find their match -Give them more if they finish early -Show them pictures and elicit collocations -Write them on the WB

Collocation (6-8 minutes) • Controlled practice to memorize the phrases

-Divide them into 2 groups -Give them all the cards together flipped down on a table -Ss pick 2, if matching keep them, till they finish -Check each other's answers -Give them markers to write what they got on the board; the verbs will be already written.

Pre-Reading (6-8 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

-Use pictures on a SlideShare to elicit the words that have to be pre-taught before reading -Ask CCQs to confirm understanding -Elicit examples -Highlight the collocation through drilling, use the WB when necessary -Relating it to the context of relaxation -Practice modelling and drilling

While-Reading #1 (2-4 minutes) • To provide students with practice of reading collocation in the context of how to relax?

-Write the verbs on the board -Ss underline the v-n phrase in the text (SOLO) -Peer-check -Announce finishing time through playing a relaxing music -Nominate some for general FB.

While-Reading #2 (6-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed reading for specific information

-Give instructions, project the table and give examples -Work individually for 3 minutes -Peer-check for 1 minute -Project the answers -Ask CCQs to find if they had understood the text, e.g. Do they all stay home to relax? No Who does sth outside and sth inside the house to relax ? John

Post-Reading (4-6 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and personalize the context to their lives

-Hand them a table to tick what they like to do when they want to relax, individually for 1 minute -Ask 2 other Ss and tick what they like, find who has similar answers while ticking -Summarize and nimnate 2 Ss to tell about a partner in 2 minutes
