To provide practice in the context of of everyday items that can be found around the house.
Subsidiary Aims
-
To provide accuracy speaking practice in a Examples: conversions between peers practicing language use. in the context of Example: Including words that their peer can think of and come up with synonyms for.
Procedure (37-41 minutes)
by introducing them to the topic and practice language use through group discussion. Using images on the powerpoint, students will be asked to guess what they are, what are they normally used for, and share what other ways they may use them personally in their homes. Students will also have the opportunity if they don't relate to the pictures to share something they use in ways other than intended uses. Relate this to the topic of the lesson, so students understand we are focusing on synonyms with verbs, similar to the lead-in activity with usage of objects.
Students will be given access to a Google Form (typeable) with definition sentences from section d. on page 61 of the student book. They will be given 6 minutes to scan the text and identify the correct words to complete the definitions (6) and then provide a synonym for the verb. Students will compare answers with their peers. OCFB will be where we go over any incorrect synonyms or answers. An example will be performed first to show the students what is expected.
Students will be given CCQ task by distinguishing whether the synonyms are exact or approximate. Example synonyms from the previous task will be recycled for students to reflect on exactness. One separate slide. Next slides: Students will also be focusing on pronunciation, specifically stresses with complete sentences. Students will be asked to place dots above words in the sentences they think are stressed. This will be done via Canva, teacher will place dots above student suggested words. Then explain what words are usually stressed (usually nouns, main verbs, adjectives, and adverbs). There will be 4 sentences for the students to identify stress on the slide. Boxes with parts of speech will be provided for students to drag around and place. Cover linking sounds (separate slide) if available in the example sentences: consonant to vowel: turn it on, con-to-con: red dress. These letters are highlighted blue.
6 practice fill in the blank tasks will be provided to students on a Google Form. The blanks will be for students to come up with a verb that fits the rest of the sentence, then come up with a synonym. Students will discuss their answers with their peers and come to agreement on meanings and synonyms. In the OCFB, we will discuss the synonyms and whether or not they are exact or close on a white board. Teacher take notes on language use and mark errors for self-correction.
6B, section C, have students come up with the rest of the sentence, using verbs with synonyms. (Speaking) saying the verb and its synonym side by side, and share if it is exact or approximate. Practice in pairs, input completed sentences in the chat box to copy and paste onto white board, and in OCFB, utilize white board to paste the sentences and ask exact or approximate? Note down errors during discussion for DEC.
Lead students to self-correct any noted errors from the previous stages of the lesson.
