Description

In this lesson, students will learn about mysteries. They will watch a short video regarding a murder mystery. They will have to work in pairs to think of the answer to the mystery. Then they will work as in groups to solve their own murder mystery. The mystery has more than one ending. Students will then discuss with other groups to talk about if they agree or disagree with the solution.

Main Aims

  • To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of murder mysteries

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification, review and practice of lexis in the context of murder mysteries while using expressions; agree and disagree

Procedure

Lead - in (5-7 minutes) • To generate interest in the theme of the lesson

*Teacher will elicit some vocabulary words (needed for video) *Help students with vocabulary if needed. *Ss will watch a short video, containing a murder mystery *They will be instructed to work in pairs to try to solve this mystery *When ss have figured out the answer, or are having a very difficult time solving the mystery, teacher will show answer key and talk about why this is the answer and if the students agree or disagree with the outcome *WCFB - on the topic and the mystery that was solved. Possible error correction if needed.

Useful Language (5-7 minutes) • To provide and clarify language which learners may find useful for completing the speaking task

*Slideshow with pictures will be shown, to elicit vocabulary words that may be necessary to understand the clues of the mystery. *If ss have trouble with the words, teacher will help. *Word that is not on the slides: a will. Ask ss if they know what a will is? Once ss have tried to come up with a meaning, teacher will clarify.

Preparing to speak (5-6 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to prepare for the task

*Teacher will explain the activity to ss. *Teacher will give an example and model the task so ss can better understand what is expected from them.

Speaking task (10-15 minutes) • For learners to practice their oral fluency in relation to murder mysteries

*Ss will be instructed to look around the room at the pieces of paper that are hung up. *They will be split into 2 groups, Group A and Group B. * They will be instructed that Group A will be green, Group B will be blue. Each group will stand up and grab their given colors' clues off the walls. They will also be instructed to grab 5 pieces of red paper (suspects). *Ss will receive a handout from the teacher, containing boxes that they can write suspect names, why the suspect is guilty, how they killed Mr. Crabtree, what do they think he was killed with. *Ss will be instructed to work in groups to solve the mystery. As fast as they can, explain to ss that this is a competition. Whoever solves the mystery first is the winner. *ICQ's - Are you working in groups? Yes - Is this a race? Yes *Teacher will monitor as ss work together to complete the task, take notes while monitoring.

Feedback and Error Correction on oral task (8-9 minutes) • To allow learners to compare results of the task and to provide content feedback on the results of the task

*Ss will not know that there is more than one solution possible for the mystery. *When they have completed that task, group a and group b will sit facing each other, and explain from one group to the other, what conclusion they came up with. *Ss will be instructed to use "I agree with....because" and "I disagree with....because" *Error correction will be provided if needed (based on the monitoring that was done)
