In this lesson the student will learn about present perfect tense. This lesson is designed for online one to one classes.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of present perfect simple to talk about experiences in the context of travel

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide the student with an opportunity to deduce the structure of the tense to be presented.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (1-2 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage the student

The teacher starts by asking questions about the student's day and his travels.

Exposure (2-3 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

The teacher shows a text about a famous modern-day Turkish explorer who is also a youtuber. The text includes enough present perfect structures with a few simple past sentences. Depending on the student's responses, some of the following CCQs will be asked. Sentence1: - Is this about Alex’s life experience? - Do we know exactly when he travelled? - Is this only one trip or many trips? - Can he travel to more countries in the future? Sentence 2: - Are these trips finished? - Are these countries part of Alex’s experience? - Do we know the dates of these visits? - Is Alex alive now?

Highlighting (3-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

The teacher will try to guide the student to discover the structure in the sentence before briefly explaining present perfect structure Next, the teacher will ask the learner to find more examples of it in the text. This stage will continue with more CCQs on the verbs the students has found.

Clarification (3-4 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Using timeline the function of the tense will be clarified. Also, the teacher will tell the student about the contraction of have to 've and has to 's in spoken English. In this part of the lesson an audio track will be played accompanied by exercises and drills if necessary.

Post-Clarification (2-3 minutes) • To give the student the opportunity to gain confidence over the structure

The teacher will talk about his own life experiences and will ask the student to mention some of his own experiences.

Controlled Practice (1-2 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Some gap fill sentences will be provided so that the learner can fully understand the structure.

Semi-Controlled Practice (2-3 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

The beginning of some sentences accompanied with some photos will be shown and the student will be asked to complete the sentences using the information on the photos.

Free Practice (2-3 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Photos with no prompts will be shown to the student and the learner will be asked to produce full sentences.
