Students will be listening to audios in the context of tipping culture.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and specific information listening practice using a text about "To tip or not to tip?" in the context of services such as restaurants and personal assistances.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a conversation amongst peers in the context of tipping culture.

Procedure

Lead-in (5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

by having learners share with the class about one or two questions relating to the topic of tipping. "What do you think about tipping?" "Have you had any experiences where you felt like you should definitely not tip?"

Pre-Teach Vocabulary (7 minutes) • To familiarize learners with challenging words from the audio

by having students speak three or four words from the audio, going over meaning, form, and pronunciation.

While-Listening #1 (6 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and general information listening tasks

with Google Forms, having the learners check their answers with each other before Open Class Feedback

While-Listening #2 (10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference listening tasks

by listening for a second time, coupled with 4-5 multiple choice questions on Google Forms to gauge their skills. The learners will check their answers amongst themselves before Open Class Feedback.

Post-Listening (10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the audio and expand on what they've learned

by discussing together on factors such as service quality, personal experiences related to tipping, and whether or not they agree with the audios.

Feedback (DEC) (5 minutes) • To conduct feedback on the tasks

with delayed error correction on language use and errors.
