W4-D4-Stop! Board Game

Description

This session uses the Stop! (Basta!) board game to review and consolidate vocabulary through fast-paced, competitive rounds. Students work together to produce words related to given categories under time pressure, promoting quick recall, pronunciation practice, and spontaneous speaking in a fun, low-stress environment.

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • Activate interest and prepare students for a fast-paced vocabulary game.

The teacher asks students if they know the game Basta! or Stop!. Briefly explain that the goal is to think fast and say words, not to be perfect. Emphasize that this is a fun review, not a test.

Explanation (8-10 minutes) • Ensure students clearly understand the game mechanics and expectations.

The teacher explains the rules step by step: One student takes a category card and reads it aloud. The timer starts. Students take turns saying a word that fits the category. The round continues quickly until someone can't answer in time and says Stop!. Model one short example round with the class. Clarify that: English only Repeated words are not allowed Pronunciation must be clear

Practice round (5-8 minutes) • Allow students to experience the game with support and clarify doubts.

Play one short practice round with the whole class. Pause if needed to clarify category meaning or pronunciation. Encourage students who hesitate.

Game! (30-32 minutes) • Promote rapid vocabulary recall and spontaneous speaking through repetition.

Start the main rounds of the game. Rotate category cards so different students read them aloud. The teacher monitors, controls the pace, and ensures fair turn-taking. Keep score if motivation is high, or play without points if energy drops.

Wrap-Up (3-5 minutes) • Lower energy gradually and reinforce positive participation.

Stop the game before students become tired. Ask quick reflection questions: Which category was difficult? Which word was new or interesting?
