W4-D2-Charades App!

Description

This session uses the Charades App on students' phones to practice veterinary-related vocabulary through movement, guessing, and teamwork. Students work in teams to act out and guess words from prepared vet-themed decks, encouraging quick thinking, listening, and spontaneous speaking in a fun, low-pressure environment.

Main Aims

  • To encourage spontaneous spoken interaction and vocabulary recall through a dynamic guessing game.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To reinforce familiar veterinary vocabulary through physical action and visual cues.
  • To develop listening and guessing skills in a fast-paced context.
  • To build confidence speaking without focusing on accuracy.
  • To promote teamwork and active participation.

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • Activate interest and set a playful, low-anxiety tone.

The teacher asks students if they have played charades before. Briefly explain that today’s words are vet-related, but the goal is fun and communication, not perfection. Show one example word from the deck without playing yet.

Explanation (8-10 minutes) • Ensure students clearly understand the game mechanics and expectations.

The teacher explains the rules step by step: One student holds the phone facing the team. The word appears on the screen. The student acts the word (no speaking). The team guesses in English. Correct guess - next word. Clarify key rules: English only No spelling the word No saying the word Demonstrate one short round with a volunteer.

Team Setup (3-5 minutes) • Organize the class efficiently to maximize participation.

Divide the class into two teams. Explain that everyone will have a turn acting and guessing. Let them choose their team names. Write them on the board to count their points and see who wins.

Game! (38-40 minutes) • Promote vocabulary recall and spontaneous speaking through repeated game rounds.

Each team sends one student to the front with the phone. The remaining teammates give clues by guessing aloud. After each round, a new student takes the phone. The teacher monitors, keeps time, and encourages quieter students to participate. No correction unless meaning is unclear. Write on the board the points they won each round.
