Quantifiers

Description

This lesson introduces core quantifiers used to express quantity with countable and uncountable nouns. Students focus on form, meaning, and nuance, especially the difference between neutral, positive, and negative quantity meanings. The lesson moves from clear classification and controlled accuracy work to guided spoken production using realistic contexts.

Main Aims

  • To improve grammatical accuracy when expressing amount.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To recognize the meaning difference between positive and negative quantity.
  • To distinguish between countable and uncountable nouns.
  • To use quantifiers in short spoken production.

Procedure

Activation (25-30 minutes) • Activate known nouns and basic vocabulary through a competitive and communicative warm-up.

Clinic Bingo Give each student a bingo card and some elements that can be used to mark the card. The teacher will choose the verbs randomly and say them aloud one by one until one student forms a line of 4 elements.

Vocabulary (12-15 minutes) • Provide lexical support for talking about quantity and measurement.

Vocabulary: bag, amount, measurement, supply, stock level, habitat setup, enclosure size, weighing scale, food measurement, nutrient balance The teacher presents each word with a clear definition. The teacher gives one example sentence per word. After each word, one student produces a sentence orally. The teacher reformulates gently if needed. Students record the vocabulary in their notebooks.

Presentation (35-40 minutes) • Clarify form, use, and meaning differences between quantifiers.

Explain the use of common quantifiers. Many - much A few - a little Few - little A lot of - lots of Give examples. Ask for examples. The teacher writes two columns on the board: Countable and Uncountable. Students suggest example nouns; the teacher sorts them.

Controlled Practice (15-20 minutes) • Develop accuracy and meaning awareness.

Students work individually. Exercise A: Choose the correct quantifier. Students compare answers in pairs. Whole-class feedback is conducted. Exercise B: Decide if the sentence is positive or negative in meaning and correct if necessary. Pair-check followed by whole-class confirmation. The teacher highlights meaning differences (few vs a few, little vs a little).

Semi-controlled Practice (10-15 minutes) • Increase speed and confidence in choosing quantifiers.

The teacher reads short situations aloud (e.g. "There isn't much food left."). Students respond with one sentence using a quantifier. Students must indicate whether the situation is okay or a problem. Brief oral correction is provided when necessary.
