Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of the future continuous. Students will be better able to understand and use the future continuous to express actions in the future at a specific time.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To utilize the future continuous in freer practice conversation.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (1-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Present one slide that has an illustration of a child and an UFO. Ask the students: What will happen next? Wait for responses. The go to the next slide and ask: What will be happening tonight at 8 p.m.? The purpose is to set up the lesson as a discussion for the future continuous and to illustrate how the mention of the specific time will change the tense that is used.

Clarification (12-14 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Introduce future continues to the students using a video on YouTube. Play this video for the students. https://youtu.be/CrB-TwICnSU?si=sULLN4-bp4kjBA9X Afterwards, go over the slides to further clarify, use examples of what future continuous is and is not. Go over meaning and form of future continuous. Have students read the slides to increase STT and decrease TTT. Ask students if they have any questions. Clarify any other concepts the students may be confused about.

Controlled Practice (10-12 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Students will practice the future continuous using a Google form multiple choice form. They will spend about 5 minutes answering the questions on their own and then they will discuss the answers with each other. Free Practice (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Students to practice language using the future continuous to make predictions about a specific time in the future. Ask the student questions to discuss among themselves the following prompts: -By the end of 2026, I'll be (or will not be)... -In 2046, AI will be (or will not be) ... While the students discuss, teacher will annotate any mistakes and correct during delayed correction at the end of their discussion time.
