Discuss with students the nature of holidays and travel relating to spreading illness and generally feeling unwell due to over eating and over indulging in alcohol. Ask students if they experienced any symptoms this holiday season. Ask ' Do you get sich after the holidays? Have you had too many desserts and ended up with a stomach ache? Have you drank too much wine and gotten a headache?' Elicit responses from students.
Show students the two pictures from the students book on google slides. Ask students who looks ill in the pictures (Simon and Emily). Tell students they will be listening to two conversations to figure out what's wrong with Simon and Emily (S: Terrible stomach ache, E: Headache and sore throat) and if they are going to the meeting (No, it was rescheduled). Answer as a class and note answers on slide. Teach students the meaning and pronunciation of sympathy/sympathetic and give an example. Play audio after sharing presentation link in the chat. Students will choose which manner of pronunciation sounds more sympathetic. Have students listen to the audio again. Before listening go over the questions they will be answering via google forms and how to categorize them. Answer the first question together. Have students submit the form and review as a class.
Send FigJam activity via chat. Explain to students you want them to fill in the blanks. Answer the first question together as a class. Give students 2 minutes to finish then review as a class. Pull up google doc to review form, give examples, and discuss intonation (checking a problem, giving advice, and teach the fixed expression 'Get well soon' with CCQs like 'is the person you say this too healthy? No. 'Is this an order or a wish? Wish. Are we talking about the past or future? Future.)
Show students a slide of common ailments and have them read them aloud. Tell students they will choose an illness to discuss with a partner. Explain they will take turns being sympathetic and giving advice. Change student pairs and repeat up to three times. Monitor students closely for future feedback.
Note sentences that need correcting on a slide and illicit answers on how students can improve these sentences. Give feedback on their answers.
