Description

This lesson expands students' use of the Past Simple by introducing the use of irregular verbs. Building on the previous day' structures, students learn to use irregulars and did / didn’t correctly and return verbs to their base form. Vocabulary of the day supports sequencing and basic clinical reporting, helping learners move toward short, coherent narratives about past events.

Main Aims

  • Successfully use Past Simple with regular and irregular verbs to express ideas that took place in previous times.

Subsidiary Aims

  • Use sequencing words and clinical vocabulary to describe past events.
  • Form and use Past Simple sentences with irregular verbs accurately.
  • Distinguish between past verb forms and base forms after did.

Procedure

Activation (25-30 minutes) • Let the students wake up and start the day with more energy and enthusiasm.

Start the day with a quick and fun dynamic. Memory game! Review some verbs in past. Wheel of verbs.

Vocabulary (12-15 minutes) • Introduce and practice sequencing vocabulary and clinical terms needed for reporting past events.

Vocabulary: first, then, after that, finally, past event, dehydration, temperature reading, stool sample, X-ray image, ultrasound scan Teacher writes each word on the board. Teacher gives one clear example sentence per word (naturally using Past Simple). First, the vet checked the temperature reading. After that, they took a stool sample. Students repeat pronunciation. Each student produces one sentence per word.

Presentation (25-30 minutes) • Explain the correct use of the irregular verbs in past in affirmative, negative and interrogative sentences.

Teach structure and function of past simple with irregular verbs, including how to form negative and question sentences with did/didn't. Mention common irregular verbs in past. Review the structures of past. Put more examples.

Controlled Practice (22-25 minutes) • Put the grammar into practice.

-Fill in the blanks exercise. Complete the sentences with the correct form of the verb. Write on the board. Give them 10 minutes to answer. Check the answers together. -Find the mistakes in the following sentences. Write them on the board. Give them 10 minutes to correct them. Check the sentences together.

Production (17-20 minutes) • Encourage communicative use of Past Simple affirmative, negative, and questions.

Students work in pairs. Student A describes a past clinic event (real or invented). Student B must: ask at least 3 Past Simple questions, and respond using 1 negative sentence. Then they switch roles. Requirements: Use sequencing words Use at least 3 veterinary terms Teacher monitors and gives delayed feedback.
