Procedure (40-47 minutes)
Show slide with film signage and film review site logos. Ask: What do you think we're writing about today? What kind of movies do you like? What makes a movie good in your opinion? How do you decide what movie to see? Who do you ask? Do you look online? Where do you go online for trustworthy reviews or recommendations? Write relevant movie lexis on slide.
Introduce film review and give students 1 minute to read. Explain: Now we’re going to look at a short film review. I'm going to give you 1 minute to read on your own for the main idea. Don’t write anything yet. Just read. ICQs: “Are you working alone or with a partner?” Alone “Are you filling in blanks or answering questions now?” No After 1 minute, instruct: Now, I'm going to put you into pairs and you will work with your partner to complete two tasks. First, fill in the blanks using the sentence starters from the box. Then, look at each paragraph and discuss its main purpose. You have 4 minutes.” ICQs Are you doing one task or two? Two Are you working alone? No, with a partner Do you start with the blanks or the paragraph purpose? The blanks Do you write or just discuss paragraph purpose? Just discuss Put students in BORs and monitor. Next, go over fill in the blank answers in OCFB. Ask CCQs: 1. A film I enjoyed - Has the writer seen the film? (yes) Did the writer like the film? (yes) 2. It’s about - Does this sentence give opinions? (no) Does it describe the main idea of the story? (yes) What is the verb in this phrase? (is) Fill in content table on next slide with P1 sentence starters. Now ask: And what about paragraph purpose? [Student name} What did you and your partner find is the purpose of paragraph 1? Write answer in table and add paragraph name to column 1. Go back to review script to look at next fill in the blank and ask CCQs: 3. There are a number of things I liked - Is the writer giving one idea or several? (several) What is the verb? (are) Is the verb singular or plural? (plural) Are these opinions positive? (yes) What are some synonyms for "a number of"? (many, several) Fill in content table on next slide with P2 sentence starters. Ask: [Student name} What did you and your partner find is the purpose of paragraph 2? Write answer in table and add paragraph name to column 1. Go back to review text to look at next fill in the blank and ask CCQs: 4. I would recommend this film - Is this advice for one person? (no) Is this a general opinion? (yes) Can we shorten this phrase with a contraction? (yes, I'd) Fill in content table on next slide with P3 sentence starters. Ask: [Student name} What did you and your partner find is the purpose of paragraph 3? Write answer in table and add paragraph name to column 1.
Explain: Now it's your turn to write a film review. Select a movie you've seen recently and use the content table we completed as a template. Your review should include an introduction with summary paragraph, an opinion paragraph with several things you liked about the film, and a closing paragraph with your final recommendation. Your review should also include the 4 sentence starters we discussed. You will have 16 minutes. ICQs: Are you writing about your own film? Yes How many paragraphs will your review have?”Three What goes in the first paragraph? Intro + summary What goes in the second paragraph? Opinions What goes in the last paragraph? Recommendation Should you use the sentence starters from the table? Yes How long do you have? 16 minutes Give each student their own slide to write on. Start timer and monitor student work.
Explain: Now you’re going to check your classmates film reviews. I'm going to put you in pairs in BORs. You will read your partner's review and use this checklist to make sure your their review met the requirements. Check that is has 3 paragraphs with clear purpose in the right order. Then look for the target language sentence starters, highlight each one, and make sure they're used correctly. You'll have 8 minutes. ICQs: Are you checking your partner’s writing? Yes Are you checking for correct paragraph purpose? Yes Are you checking for correct paragraph order? Yes What are you highlighting? Sentence starters How much time do you have? 8 minutes At the end of time, bring students back and ask how they did. Ask if they might want to see the movie their partner recommended.
