To provide skimming and detailed reading practice using a text about the fast pace of modern life, supported by frequent use of numbers and statistics.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of numbers in the context of speed of modern life

Subsidiary Aims

  • To give students speaking practice by discussing why life is getting faster today and expressing their views using numbers from the text.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The students are asked:" Imagine you’re in a clinic waiting for the doctor, your phone died, and you forgot your charger. You still have to wait an hour till the doctor comes. Do you get irritable? Or do you get impatient when other people are talking specially when they are talking so slowly?"

Pre-Reading/Listening (7-9 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

The students will be taught the meanings of the following words: annoying(adj.), delayed(n.), impatient(n.), hang up(v.) by using memes. Then they will be asked to make sentence with the highlighted words in the memes.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (3-5 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

In this stage, students are going to read the title and answer this question: What is the main reason why life is going faster today?

While-Reading/Listening #2 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

In this stage, students are going to read the article and answer the following questions: How much faster are we walking than in the past? How many Google searches are made every hour? How many people decide not to go back to a web page if it takes more than 10 seconds to load?

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

In this stage, students will be devided in groups of 3 and are asked these questions: What other things are increasing the speed of our lives? Do you think studying 2 hours feels so much longer than scrolling for two hours? why? What is the most annoying thing to wait for? and then they have to share their answers to the class.
