Description

In this lesson, students will focus on the Past Continuous tense to describe actions that were in progress at a specific time in the past. The lesson starts with a lead-in to activate their knowledge and recall simple past events, followed by practice using relatable examples. Ss will practice forming sentences using subject + was/were + verb-ing, including affirmative, negative, and question forms. The lesson also includes pair and group activities to encourage speaking and storytelling in the past continuous. Finally, a feedback stage addresses common mistakes and explains the correct usage, helping students communicate past continuous actions clearly with accuracy .

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification, review and practice of The tense in the context of stories To enable students to understand and correctly use the Past Continuous tense to describe actions that were ongoing at a specific time in the past.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist, specific information, detailed, deduction and inference listening practice using a text about The past continuous tense in the context of 1- help students form affirmative, negative, and interrogative sentences in the Past Continuous tense. 2- practice using time expressions such as while and when in sentences.3- To develop students’ listening and speaking skills through activities describing past events.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To expose students to the past continuous tense in context through listening and reading questions.

SB p.89, Audio Track 10.2 Giving Instructions: Tell the students: “You’re going to listen to a conversation between Jason and his friend Marco.” • Tell them: “Listen and number the injuries in the order you hear them.” • Play the audio once. Exposure (3-5 minutes) • To help students understand specific details related to past continuous actions.

Highlight (2-3 minutes) • To highlight the target language (past continuous vs past simple) in context.

Language Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify meaning, form, and use of the past continuous.

• Write a model sentence on the board: “I was walking along when I felt something sting my hand.” Meaning: • Draw a simple timeline and show the long action vs short action. • Elicit that the past continuous describes the background action. Freer Practice (8-10 minutes) • To allow students to personalize the use of the past continuous.

Feedback & Error Correction (4-5 minutes) • To correct errors and reinforce correct use of the target language.

• Write common mistakes heard during monitoring on the board. • Ask students to correct them in pairs. • Elicit corrections from students. • Praise good use of the past continuous.
