Description
Materials
Main Aims
-
To clarify the use of must and have to to express obligation.
Subsidiary Aims
-
To provide controlled and freer speaking practice using obligation language in a familiar context.
Procedure (29-39 minutes)
The class will be started by a talk and conversation about the way I do my house chores and my obligations. it will be followed by asking students to Tell the class about the rules, chores and obligations they do at home.
I will write some of the students’ sentences on the board and underline (must) and (have to). I will draw attention to the different forms used to express obligation.
I will ask CCQs such as: Is this about obligation or choice? (Obligation) Is it about now or the past? (Now / general). I will clarify that (must) is often used for personal & internal obligation and ((have to) for external rules. The structure will be elicited (subject + must / have to + base verb). I will clarify negative forms (mustn’t vs don’t have to) and drill pronunciation where necessary.
Students will complete a gap-filling exercise choosing between must or have to individually ((from their student book)). They will then check their answers in pairs. Finally, I will check answers with the whole class.
Students will be divided into groups of 3 or 4. They will discuss rules they have at work, university, or home using must and have to. At the end, one student from each group will report back to the class. I will monitor and provide feedback if needed.
