Description

The lesson begins with a teacher-led discussion about ongoing actions in the morning when I woke up and continues with students sharing similar experiences from their own lives.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of Past Continuous in the context of Daily Routines and Activities

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of Daily Routines and Activities

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The class will be started with a short talk about my morning and the actions that were ongoing when I woke up. This will be followed by students writing their own examples about their morning or day in the chat box

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

I will choose 3 sentences from the lead-in and write them on the board in the correct past continuous form to draw students’ attention to the target language

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

I will draw a timeline on the board and use the highlighted examples to clarify the meaning of the past continuous. I will ask CCQs such as: “Are these actions in the past?” (Yes), and “Were they in progress at a specific time?” (Yes). I will then contrast the past continuous with the past simple using an example such as “I was making breakfast when the phone rang” to show a longer background action and a shorter completed action. Next, I will elicit the form from students and write it on the board: subject + was / were + verb + ing. I will also clarify the negative and question forms. Finally, I will focus on the pronunciation of the –ing ending to help students produce it accurately.

Controlled Practice (5-8 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Students are going to do gap filling task on page 130 individually in 3 minutes. The task includes 5 questions focusing on choosing and forming the past continuous correctly. After finishing, the answers will be checked with the whole class.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Students will work in pairs and choose a favorite picture on their phones. They will describe what was happening at the time and explain why they like the picture using the past continuous
