Main Aims

To provide clarification of past continuous in the context of reading./To provide students with clarification and controlled practice and freer practice of the past continuous in the context of a personal anecdote, so that they can recognize and use the structure to describe actions in progress in the past .
Subsidiary Aims
-
To provide reading for gist and detail using a reading context in order to expose them to natural examples of past continuous. To give students the opportunity to personalize the target language by talking a bout what they were doing in the past.
Procedure (37-49 minutes)
Play some audio files (the sound of the rain,the sound of the laugh,the sound of boiling water) then ask Ss ("what was happening?" "what were they doing?")
Ask Ss to read the text quickly, tell them to stand in two lines and share their knowledge from 2minutes of reading and retell the gist of the story themselves. Show the slide1 with 3 questions (Where was Jane living in 1972? Where was she working ?What was Jane's boyfriend studying?) and ask them to read the text again.
Give students WS1 to fill the blank parts which is the past continuous. now ask them to quickly check it with the text and highlight their answers in their books.
Give students WS2 (A guided discovery task) to answer the questions from memory and with their own knowledge. After you taught the M & F and also the use of the language, now go to Grammar bank p.128 and explicitly teach the grammar. Pronunciation: Go back to p.17 a=Ask Ss to look at the 6 photos from Anya's Instagram page. Which person do you think is Anya? Who do you think the other people are? b=Play the audio track and ask them to complete the missing words then ask them to read and check the answers while you are checking the pronunciation of the target language. c-d-e=for pronunciation clarifying.
Go to the Grammar bank p.128 part a & b : ask students to do the task individually then check with a partner and then check it as a class. Do the same pace for part b.(error correction as needed)
Ask a volunteer to come and sit on the hot chair; the person should show an Instagram post her own and tell the story of it using the new grammar(Past Continuous).
