B1 – Yes Man: An Adventure (Reading & Listening)

Description

In this lesson, students develop their reading and listening skills in the context of a book about a man who said “yes” to everything for a week. The lesson begins with a lead-in to activate learners’ background knowledge about holidays and new experiences. Students then read a short text for gist and for detail, followed by a listening task to identify specific information about the same story. The lesson finishes with a speaking activity in which students talk about their own surprising or enjoyable experiences.

Procedure

Lead-in (Exercise a) (3-5 minutes) • To activate background knowledge about holidays and new experiences.

Teacher shows pictures and asks students to work in pairs to ask and answer the questions in exercise (a). Teacher monitors. Whole-class feedback follows.

Pre-teach blocking lexis (4-5 minutes) • To clarify key vocabulary needed to understand the text.

Teacher elicits and teaches key words (e.g., water skiing, travel agent, surprised) using pictures and simple definitions. CCQs are used to check understanding.

Gist Reading (Exercise b) (2-3 minutes) • To practise reading for gist.

Students read the text quickly to answer gist questions. Teacher checks answers with the class.

Detail Reading (Exercise c) (6-7 minutes) • To practise reading for detail.

Students read again and answer detailed questions. They check answers in pairs, followed by whole-class feedback.

Pre-listening (Exercise d) (2-3 minutes) • To prepare students for the listening text.

Students discuss the questions in pairs and make predictions. Brief whole-class feedback.

Listening for Detail (Exercise e) (6-7 minutes) • To practise listening for specific information.

Students listen and decide if statements are true or false and correct false ones. Pair check, then whole-class feedback. Audio played twice.

Speaking Exploitation (Exercise f) (6-7 minutes) • To provide fluency practice talking about personal experiences.

Students discuss a time they were surprised but enjoyed something. Teacher monitors and provides delayed feedback.

Feedback on Language (2-3 minutes) • To improve accuracy and range of spoken language.

Teacher highlights good language and corrects common errors from the speaking stage.
