Main Aims

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification of present continuous and modifying adverbs in the context of students relevent experiences in different sutuations

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

At first stage I will show some photos related to emotions to students and ask their opinion about them. After that, I will write positive and negative emotions on the board and then write some examples that will evoke a positive or a negative emotion and I will ask:what situations would make you feel a positive emotion and what situations would make you feel a negative emotion, can you name the emotion? My CCQ question is:1-being excited is a positive emotion or a negative one? being bored is a negative emotion or a positive one?

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

The next stage begins with working in pairs.students describe how the people are feeling. They then describe what is happening in each picture. Then I will check answers in class. My ICQ question is : Do I want you to work in pairs or groups? After that,I will play the recording and students should match the words to the photos in exercise 1 and then I will check answers as a class. For exercise 3,I will explain the task and then students work individually to complete the activity and in pairs students will think of more adjectives to add to the list such as surprised, thrilled, furious and then I will check in class.Next, students will complete a quiz .I will ask, what kind of quiz is this and elicit ideas.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

for exercise 5,I will ask students to work individually and students read the tweets and they will add a suitable adjective from exercise 2 for each hashtag. They then compare their answers in pairs and I will check them in class and I will ask them to give reasons for their choices. My ICQ questions is:Do I want you to do it alone or in pairs? For exercise 6,I will tell students they should listen for key words to get the gist and how people are speaking.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the grammer of present continuous

At this stage ,I will revise the structure of the present continous and Elicit sentences to describe what students are doing now and I will ask students what the verbs in box have in common and I will elicit more sentences with state verbs. And then for the exercise 7,I will tell students they are going to listen to the recording again and I will point out that they are not in the same order. At this point I just check that students have numbered the speakers correctly. For exercise 8,I will tell students to look out the speech bubbles and I will ask :how does speaker 1 feel and why?then I totally ckeck in class.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice and learning modifying adverbs

At this stage,I will go through the modifyng adverbs and I will ask students to put the adverbs in order starting with a little bit. With a stronger class, you could elicit more modifying adverbs and then I will check answers as a class.

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

For exercise 10,I will describe a situation that evokes a strong feeling for example, when I get on a plane,I feel extremely anxious. Then go through the situations together and ask students how each situation makes them feel. Then I tell students to make notes and encourage them to think of an adjective and modifying adverbs for each one.At first they will do it in groups of 4 then I will check it in class totally. My ICQ question:Do I want you to work in pairs or groups?

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Finally, for exercise 11,Students in pairs ask and answer questions and I monitor and check pronunciation and grammar usage. Then for extra activity,I will write the following on the board :when I go to the dentist,I get rather frightened. And I ask students to think of another good or bad situation. Each student should write a situation on a piece of paper. Then I will put students in groups and one student from each group collects the pieces of paper and puts them in bag.Students then take turns to pick a piece of paper and make a sentence saying how they feel in the situation.I will encourage them to use modifying adverbs. Finally, I will ask students:what have you learned today?
