Main Aims

  • By the end of the lesson, students will have developed their reading skills by identifying main ideas, understanding specific information, and interpreting opinions in a reading text.

Subsidiary Aims

  • By the end of the lesson, students will be able to discuss the topic of art, giving and justifying their opinions.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-8 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The teacher shows provocative images related to art (e.g. street art or an everyday object presented as art). Students discuss in pairs: “Is this art? Why / why not?” Brief whole-class feedback is taken, and key ideas are elicited without confirming answers.

Pre-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Students are given jigsaw puzzle cards (short sections of the text in mixed order). Individually, students read their section and identify the main idea. In groups, students work together to reconstruct the logical order of the text, justifying their decisions. The teacher monitors and supports but does not confirm answers.

While-Reading (3-5 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Students read the full text quickly in their books to check whether their reconstructed order was correct. They confirm or adjust their answers in pairs. Brief whole-class feedback is conducted.

While-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Students complete the True / False / Does Not Say task from the book. They are reminded to underline evidence in the text. Students compare answers in pairs before whole-class feedback.

Post-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Art Gallery Walk (Mingling) Students will walk around the class, watch, and discuss the artwork on the wall with their peers. There will be a feedback at the end if time allows.
