Procedure (36-46 minutes)
Ask: Where do you go to ask advice? When was the last time you were asked for advice? Do you like to give advice? Why/why not? Let students give examples of sources they use when looking for answers to different kinds of questions. Introduce topic and lesson aims.
Explain: We're going to listen to 4 experts give advice in 4 different audio segments. Your job is to match the expert to the advice given in each audio segment. ICQ: Are you listening for details or just matching who gives which advice? Just matching Have students listen and match individually, then go over answers together. Answers: 1c, 2a, 3b, 4d Explain: Now I'm going to give you the script (next Google slide). I'd like you to take 1 minute to highlight all phrases used to give advice. Let's do the first one together (demonstrate with "Take every opportunity"). Show highlighted answer on Google Slide to compare after.
MEANING Have students place each expression into the correct category on the Google slide (table in TLAS). Explain: Some advice encourages or tells us what to do, Some advice warns us not to do something. I'd like you to work individually for 1-2 minutes and decide which phrases tell someone to DO something and which tell someone NOT to do something? ICQs: • Where will you put each phrase? in the right column • How long will you have? 1-2 minutes Show answers and ask CCQs. 1. Take every opportunity … If I say ‘Take every opportunity to speak English,’ do I do it once or whenever I can?” Whenever I can 2. Resist the temptation … If you resist temptation, do you want to do it? Yes Is the advice to do it or not do it? Not do it 3. Always remember … Is this important advice? Yes Should you forget it? No 4. Be careful (not) … Is this advice about danger or something safe? Danger 5. Make sure you (don’t) … Is this about checking something? Yes If we say don’t, is it still ok to do it? No FORM (next Google slide) Ask: Which verb form do the the first three sentences take? (Infinitive) So what word are we missing here? CCQ: What do we mean by infinitive? (to + base verb) Clarify: Though they're used differently in these sentences, "always remember" and "make sure" can use the infinitive verb form as well. Ask students how each sentence can be changed. Answer: 4. Always remember [to] wear what you feel comfortable wearing and what looks good on you. 5. Make sure [to] appear friendly, but not too keen. PRONUNCIATION (next Google slide) State: Let's review pronunciation. Ask: Looking at this first phrase, where is the stress in the word opportunity? Listen, "opportunity." Mark stressed syllable, then have students repeat. Ask which other words in the phrase are stressed. Have students listen and repeat, backchaining as necessary. Note that we use the weak form of to when used with these phrase, (so no stress on it). Repeat for all TL phrases. Always remember … ALways, reMEMber Take every opportunity to … TAKE, EVe-ry, opporTUnity Resist the temptation to … reSIST, tempTAtion Make sure you don’t… MAKE SURE, DON’T Be careful not to … CAREful Clarify pronunciation of "every" (2 syllables only) and "sure" (different American vs British). Every (/ˈevri/), Sure (/ʃur/ or /ʃɔː/) American vs British
