Writing Lesson TP 7
Intermediate level

Materials

Main Aims

  • My main aim is to have students leave this lesson feeling more confident about writing emails in English in the future.

Subsidiary Aims

  • An important subsidiary aim is for students to not only know how to write emails in English properly, but to know how to write in the correct tone and when to do so.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Activity: Discuss different courses available. Procedure: I will prompt students to list courses they know or are interested in and encourage a brief discussion on why they find these courses appealing.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

Activity: Analyze an example email written in response to an enquiry. Procedure: Identify Different Sections: Ask students to identify and label the parts of the email using the chat or a collaborative document. Use breakout rooms for small groups to discuss the sections. Discussion: Discuss the overall structure and purpose of the email, emphasizing how it addresses the enquiry.

Useful Language (8-10 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

Activity: Highlight and clarify useful language for writing email enquiries. Procedure: Present phrases and vocabulary relevant to email enquiries, focusing on: Formal and informal salutations (e.g., “Dear Sir/Madam” vs. “Hi”) Language for requesting information (e.g., “I would like to know…”) Closing phrases (e.g., “Thank you for your assistance”) Use a shared document or whiteboard to compile these phrases, encouraging students to ask questions about their usage.

Productive Task(s) (15-17 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

Activity: Students write their own email enquiry about further information regarding the courses. Instructions: Provide clear writing instructions in the chat or shared screen: Purpose for writing Asking for information Background information (optional) Request for action Salutations Labeling Parts: Instruct students to number the different paragraphs and label the sections in their email drafts.

Feedback and Error Correction (5-7 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

I will chat through errors using a Google slide or other whiteboard application, focusing on one student at a time.
