Description

In this lesson students will learn about functional language in their daily life and dealing with unexpected problems. Students will practice pronunciation, meaning and form.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and review of language used for of expressions for reactions to unexpected problems (e.g., “Oh, dear!”, “That’s fine.”, “This is ridiculous!”)

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency for speaking and provide listening tasks to practice pronunciation and do drilling.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Share my screen with my presentation of TP5. Introduce topic "Functional language - Dealing with unexpected problems" from book New cutting edge upper intermediate page 38. Show picture in slide 2 and ask, What problems might happen here? e.g., wrong order. have students brainstorm 3 - 5 min

Content preparation (8-10 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming task through listening

Listening 1 for gist task. Google forms. Instructions: I'm going to send you the link for the next activity. I'm going to play an audio and you are going to get general context of each conversation and answer the folowing questions. - Where does the conversation takes place? - Who are the people? - What is the unexpected problem? Intensive task Match each from the box to the correct situation. Annoyance Acceptance Regret - That's fine. - Oh, dear! - This is ridiculous! - I don't see why not. - Right, i see. - Oh, no! You're joking! - I don't believe it! - Oh what a shame!

Useful Language (8-10 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

Target language MFP Google slides page 6 Match the rhe phrases with the correct situation. And then listen to audio from book and have students do drilling. focus on inntonation.

Productive Task(s) (8-16 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

Controlled practice. Student will answer slide 7, they will have to answer what unexpected problems might occur in the next situations. 1. You want to pay your bill but your credit card got declined. 2. You want to park a car in a public car park. 3.You arrive at a hotel where you have made a reservation for two nights. Free practice. Slide 8. Student will do role plays in pairs and will choose of the situations from last activity. They will create and perform where an unexpected problem occurs and it's reacted to.

Feedback - Delayed error correction. (5 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language.

Teacher will do OCFB. make corrections if neccesary, make observations and write good use of language.
