Procedure (22-37 minutes)
T starts by modeling with a common example: "I’m thinking of a place we all know. It’s usually very busy, and the atmosphere is noisy but fun. It’s not very expensive. They are famous for their burgers and fries. And we stopped going there recently because of their support. What is it?". T gives Ss some checking questions to introduce the images: "What other places do you like to eat at?". "Do you prefer street food or fancy restaurants?". T introduces the "Back-to-the-Board" game with the suggested local images: Instructions: In pairs, one student describes the image while the other guesses the place. T provides content feedback
T sets the scene for the listening activity: "Now, let’s listen to three people: Jo, Tristan, and Kate. They are talking about their favourite places to eat. Do they sound like the places we just described?" T provides the first listening task (Gist): Activity: Listen and write (J), (T), or (K) next to the following sentences: He/She loves fish and chips. He/She doesn't like expensive restaurants. He/She likes noodles with meat. He/She often goes to a restaurant for lunch. He/She always has Sunday lunch with his/her family. He/She thinks it’s a great place to go with your friends. T plays the audio again for "Noticing" language (Language focus): Task: Listen again and tick the specific phrases you hear in the Useful Language box. T provides content feedback: T checks the answers with the whole class. T asks follow-up questions: "Which person's favourite place is similar to your favourite place? Why?"
T draws Ss attention to the 'Useful Language' ): "We heard Jo, Tristan, and Kate use some great phrases. Let's look at how they described their places." T highlights the three main categories: T provides controlled practice: "Choose one phrase from each group (a, b, and c) and write a sentence about a place you know."
T sets the main task : "Now it’s your turn to be the speaker. You are going to tell us about your absolute favourite place to eat." Task 1a (page 57): "Spend 3 minutes making notes. Don't write full sentences, just ideas about: The name and where it is. Why do you like it (the reason)? The atmosphere (lively? quiet? traditional?). The food you get there (the specialty). T assists during preparation (: Task 1b (page 57): "Think about what you will say. If you need a specific word or phrase, ask me now." T walks around to help with vocabulary. T organizes the speaking activity (Production): Task 2 (page 57): "In pairs, take turns to talk about your favourite place. Don't just read your notes—try to look at your friends and use the Useful Language we practiced." T asks monitors and provides help if needed. T sets the follow-up task : Task 3 (page 57): "Now, change your partner. Tell your new partner which places your previous group members liked. Who had the most interesting place?" T provides final content feedback.
