Description

In this lesson, students will be learning more about how to extend their talk in IELTS TEST speak part two. All the candidates are English teachers, so they're already familiar with the language and how to use it, but we might work on extending their language and the length of their talk to last for complete 2 minutes without any hesitation.

Main Aims

  • To provide the students with a practice on IELTS speaking test part 2 and develop their fluency and coherence skill.
  • To familiarize Ss with speaking test part 2 in the IELTS speaking section.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide specific information and detailed listening model for IELTS part 2 speaking test in the context of Education

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-6 minutes) • To generate students interest in the topic of the lesson and familiarize ss with the nature of speaking part 2 test

1. T starts the session by introducing the students to an old phrase or an old saying, "Old people always say, 'study hard to be well educated, so you get a good job” Do you agree? 2. T will ask them, What do you think of this statement? Do you agree or disagree with it? 3. T will give them 2 minutes to discuss this statement in breakout rooms. 4. When they get back, T will ask what they have in common. What do they agree on? What do they disagree on ......etc. 5. T will ask, 'What do you know about speaking part 2?' 6. T will listen to their answers 7. T will display the task in slide 3 8. T will give them 1 min. to answer 9. T will provide the answers 1 → D 2 → A 3 → E 4 → C 5 → B

Preparing to speak (preparation) (8-10 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through listening

In this stage, the teacher will show the students an IELTS question. ' Describe a subject you enjoyed studying at school. What was the name of the subject? Why do you like it? How did you enjoy it? 2. T will ask students, 'What answers do they expect for this question? ' Did you listen to the students carefully? And get their answers 3. After that, T will display the video and tell them 'This is an eye examiner pretending to be a candidate, he is answering the questions we talked about? Listen to the video and tell me how he introduces his ideas. What did he use to link ideas? 4. T will play the video 5. T will give students time to listen and answer the questions. 6 After they listen, the teacher will send them to breakout rooms to discuss their answers together 7. The teacher will ask for their feedback on the things they talked about 8. Then the teacher will show them the possible answers 9. The teacher will tell them. 'Let's learn how to extend our answers' They will have to watch the video again and complete the short table in PPTX There is a basic answer. THEY have to listen and write it down. Then the extra information column 10. T will give them enough time to get the answers and discuss them 11 After finishing, the teacher will discuss the answers with them and teach them how to extend their answer or speak at length

Useful Language (8-10 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

1. At this stage, T will try to improve their coherence by providing them with some cohesive devices. 2 T will display the screen by showing them the picture of linking words. E.g. (and but if so, because 3. T explains that those are the basics, and those are commonly used, and we need to develop our coherence by using a variety of them. 4. T will ask ''what we can add under each category or under each column? T give them 1 minute to think. And then he will share the file, 5. T will give them three minutes to match 6. When the time's up, the teacher will send them to break-out rooms to check their answers together 7. When they get back, T shows them the answers 8. The teacher will ask whether they got all of them correctly or not

Speaking Task(s) (18-20 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice fluency and coherence in speaking part 2

1. The teacher will divide them all into 2 groups. One of them will be the examiner. The second will be a candidate 2. The teacher will display the screen for the first speaking task 3. The candidate will be given one minute to prepare 4. Once he finished, the examiner has to write comments on his languOnce he finished, the examiner has to write comments on his language The examiner will set a 2-minute alarm for the candidate to speak about the topic for a complete two minutes 5. The teacher has to mention that they can use the useful language, and also the tips and tricks given on how to extend their answers using basic and extra information around the topic 6. The teacher will monitor and provide support whenever needed 7. If there is extra time teacher can display the second speaking task in the PPTX to speak one more time by reversing turns, the examiner will be a candidate, and the candidate will be an examiner and vice versa.

Feedback and Error Correction (3-6 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

After finishing the speaking task, the teacher will ask them about the challenging points that they faced For example When did you find it hard to complete the speaking task, and why Is it because of a lack of ideas or a lack of language What do you need to do to overcome this problem in the next speaking practice After that, the teacher has to provide his language feedback based on what he heard in the conversation
