Description

In this lesson, students will understand and use basic prepositions of place (in/on/under) with familiar vocabulary (pets and parts of the house) through movement-based and communicative activities.

Materials

Abc Animal Flashcards
Abc A model house

Main Aims

  • To teach the students to correctly understand and use basic prepositions of place (in/on/under/next to) through physical movement, modeling, and a house-themed interactive game.

Subsidiary Aims

  • By the end of the lesson, students will be able to demonstrate the meaning of in, on, under, next to through physical actions and answer the question “Where is the ___?” using the correct preposition.

Procedure

Warm up (1-2 minutes) • To review parts of the House

Teacher points to the four corners labeled: kitchen, bedroom, living room, bathroom and asks; “What room is this?” Students respond: “Kitchen!” etc. (This refreshes context for the game.)

Presentation (1-3 minutes) • To provide Prepositions of Place

The teacher uses one toy animal (e.g., a cat plush) and a small box/chair/table. Modeling; “The cat is in the box.” (Put it inside.) “The cat is on the table.” (Put it on top.) “The cat is under the chair.” (Place below.) “The cat is next to the table.” (Place beside.) TPR Quick Practice Teacher: “Show me in!” “Show me on!” “Show me under!” “Show me next to!”

Main Activity (1-6 minutes) • To use TPR movement while teaching the prepositions of place

Setup: Each corner of the classroom is labeled as a room: Kitchen Bedroom Living room Bathroom Students already know these, so no need to teach them. It is given to each child an animal flashcard (cat, dog, bunny, bird). Step 1 — TPR Movement: Teacher gives instructions using rooms + prepositions: “Cat, go in the kitchen!” “Dog, go next to the bedroom!” “Rabbit, go under the table in the living room!” (If possible) “Bird, go on the sofa in the living room!” Students move accordingly. Step 2 — Teacher → Students Q&: Teacher asks the class about one student: “Where is the cat?” Students: “It is in the kitchen!” Repeating with 2–3 animals. Step 3 — Student → Student : Pairs or small groups: Student A: “Where is the dog?” Student B: “It is next to the bedroom.”

Wrap Up (1-2 minutes) • To control whether the students learned the prepositions of place or not.

Teacher points randomly to a corner and asks: “Where is the rabbit?” Students answer together.
