Conformity 2
B1-B2 level

Description

Block 2 Grammar (75 minutes)

Materials

No materials added to this plan yet.

Main Aims

  • To provide students with controlled and freer practice of the present and past passive in both spoken and written tasks, enabling them to describe processes and experiments accurately.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To integrate digital tools and gamified activities to strengthen students’ confidence and accuracy in using the passive voice, while further reinforcing vocabulary related to conformity and experiments.

Procedure

Warmer - Explain the Experiment WRONG (3-5 minutes) • To refresh lesson context and engage students

Students explain Asch’s experiment to a partner, but deliberately include three incorrect passive forms. Partner must identify and correct them.

Controlled Practice (10-15 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Students complete Google Forms or Kahoot (individual/ teams) distinguishing active vs passive & choosing the correct passive forms. Content: All items are based strictly on the original text. Examples: The accomplices ___ (instruct) to give incorrect answers. a) are instruct b) were instructed ✓ c) instructed Conformity ___ (define) as a change in behavior. a) is defined ✓ b) defined c) was defined Teacher views live results → brief feedback.

Semi-Controlled Practice (15-20 minutes) • To practise forming questions + answering using passive + target vocab

Each pair receives a set of prompt cards containing active sentences about Asch’s experiment or group pressure. Examples: People give wrong answers because of pressure. Groups influence individuals. Scientists conduct many experiments. In pairs, one student turns prompts into passive questions, e.g.: Why are wrong answers given? How are individuals influenced by groups? The partner must answer using passive + vocabulary, e.g.: Wrong answers are given because strong pressure is felt. Each correct transformation = 1 point, and each correct answer using passive + vocabulary = 1 point. After 15 minutes, the pair with the highest combined score wins.

Free Practice: One-Minute Challenge (10-15 minutes) • Fluency; consolidation of vocabulary + passive

Procedure: Students are given one of these prompts: Describe a situation where someone was influenced by a group. Describe how a scientific experiment is conducted. Explain how opinions are shaped in social groups. Rules: Students prepare silently for 1 minute. They must speak for one minute. They receive points for: Using passive voice (1 point per correct usage) Using vocabulary from the text (1 point per word used naturally) Fluency (bonus 2 points if they can speak for the full minute) Class keeps score. Top 3 speakers receive small certificates "Top Speaker"

Freer practice (consolidation) - THE CONFORMITY ARENA (15-25 minutes) • Use passive voice & vocabulary in extended spoken production; practice argumentation; encourage fluency

Groups receive 4–5 debate-style scenario cards related to conformity and social behaviour, e.g.: “Wearing school uniforms should be mandatory.” “Social media is used to influence people’s opinions.” “In school projects, decisions are usually controlled by one person.” “Teenagers are pressured into trends more than adults.” Groups discuss each scenario for 5 minutes, but must earn points by: a) using target vocabulary correctly (1 point per word used naturally) b) using passive voice creatively (1 point per correct passive form) One student in each group acts as a scorekeeper for the opposing group (to avoid cheating). After discussion time ends, each group selects one strongest argument to present to the class (short 30-40 seconds). Other groups vote on which group had the clearest argument = 3 bonus points. Final ranking displayed on the board.
