Main Aims

To develop students' listening skills, particularly listening for gist and specific information, through an audio text about Vermeer and one of his paintings.
Subsidiary Aims

1. To clarify and practice the meaning of key vocabulary (milkmaid, scene, rich, portraits, pudding, century, expensive) to support comprehension. 2. To encourage short speaking fluency by having students discuss their opinions about the artist and the painting. 3. To active students' background knowledge about art and generate interest in the listening topic.
Procedure (35-45 minutes)
Firstly, I will show the picture of the Mona Lisa painting and ask students, "Do you know the name of this painting?" "Who painted it?" "Do you like this painting?"
I will show students a row of pictures and words (milkmaid, scene, rich, portraits, pudding, century, expensive), then I ask them to match the pictures to the words. Then, by asking CCQs for each word, such as: "Does a milkmaid work with milk?" "Is a scene something you can see?" "If someone is rich, do they have a lot of money?" "Is a portrait a picture of a person?" "Is pudding food?" "Is a century 100 years?" "If something is expensive, does it cost a lot of money?" I can clarify each word's meaning.
First, I ask students to look at the picture on page 10. Then I ask them to quickly look at section "a" on page 11, and listen to the related audio recording. After that, I play the audio (track for section "a"). After students answered the questions individually, I will ask them to check their answers in pairs. Then, I am going to check the answers with the whole class. If many errors occur, I will play the audio again.
I ask students to look at section "c" on page 11 and take notes while they are listening to the audio recording. After they finish listening, I will ask them to check their answers in pairs. Then I check the answers with the whole class. If errors are high, the audio will replay.
At the end of this lesson, I will ask students, "Who was Vermeer?" "What is the painting about?" "Do you like this painting? Why or why not?". Then, students share their thoughts in pairs. After that, I will ask them to share their opinion with the whole class.
