Grammar Lesson - Future and Future Continuous
Upper-Intermediate level

Description

In this grammar lesson I will cover the future and future continuous tenses.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of the future and future continuous.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide practice speaking in the future and future continuous.
  • To provide gist reading practice using a text about the future and future continuous.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Show students a picture of Christmas. Ask: Has Christmas happend yet? When is Christmas going to happen? In December.. which is in the future right now.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Have the students read the text about a trip for Christmas. Ask a few short questions about the text. Has the trip happening yet? When is the trip going to happen? These activities that are talking about in the text have not happened yet. Talk about the future and future perfect tenses.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Have the students reread the story and highlight on a Google slide all the future and future continuous verbs.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Google slides to go over meaning, form and pronunciation. Show timeline of the future and future continuous for meaning. Have students fill out slides conjugating verbs to go over form (will also serve as controlled practice). Read sentences aloud to students and have them highlight where they think the stress is in the sentences. Go over as a class.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Students will conjugate verbs on slides. And also highlight where the stress is in sentences.

Free Practice (15-18 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Provide students with questions to answer in pairs about what they are going to be doing for Christmas this year. What will you do to decorate this year? What will you do to prepare for Christmas? What do you plan to do leading up to the holiday? What will you do on Christmas Eve/Christmas Day? What do you do to celebrate that is special to your family or culture?
