Present continuous for future arrangement
Pre intermidate level

Description

In this lesson, students will learn the meaning, form, pronunciation of verbs with -ing- in future form. Students will practice the use of the verbs and doing sentences using them and having conversation with their peers.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of present continous for future arrangements and practice the form and pronunciation.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To develop speaking skills and writing skills

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Start the class by introducing the topic (New Year's celebrations) and ask the students how they celebrated New Year's last year. This way, the students will already know what will be discussed in today's class and can participate by sharing their experiences

Exposure (7-8 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Share the Google forms document in the class chat. The first activity is listening; students will need to complete each text with the correct verb form while listening to the audio (track 4.5). The audio will be played a second time, in case any student hasn't completed the activity yet. If the activity isn't completed with either audio, the text is transcribed in Google Slides. Conduct Open Class Feedback (OCFB) to address any doubts and review answers.

Clarification (10-14 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Share the Google Slides document. On pages 4, 5, and 6, we will cover MFP (Meaning, Form, Pronunciation). This section will explain the correct way to use -ing verbs to form sentences or questions. The formula is: subject + am/is/are + verb-ing + future arrangement. It will be explained visually with a timeline and a table demonstrating the correct way to form sentences. Students will then have to complete sentences using the following verbs: (see), (fly), (drive), ( leave), ( arrive).

Controlled Practice (4-5 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

For controlled practice, students will complete an activity from page 37 of the book, but they will do it in Google Forms. They will need to complete sentences using the verbs: cooking, having, doing, meeting, taking. There are 8 sentences; this activity will help them practice. Answers: a) going b) doing. c) meeting. d) going. e) having. f) cooking, having g) taking h) going.

Free Practice (8-9 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

For free practice, I'm going to ask the students a question ('What are you doing on Christmas Eve?') and show them a slide with various images of different things and activities. Students need to think of sentences using the verbs we've seen during the class and share them with the class. E.g., 'My husband is bringing games,' 'My aunt is bringing food,' 'My cousin is buying wine,' etc.
