In this lesson, SS will learn idioms related to relationships by matching the definition to the expressions. The SS will be doing a variety of productive speaking tasks ranging from semi-controlled to free in order to encourage and practice fluency. The lesson will start off with the SS listening to a love song and filling in the gaps to set the context of love and relationships.

Main Aims

  • To produce a series of productive speaking tasks to practice fluency in the context of relationships.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To clarify a selection of relationship idioms and have SS use them during productive speaking activitities.


Stage 1 (Lead in) (4-5 minutes) • SS will listen to a love song for specific detail and do a gap fill activity as to elicit the lesson's context.

T will give gap fill HO and ask them to look at the gaps they must fill. T will play the song. SS will compare their answers with a partner at the end. T will get FB from SS orally.

Stage 2 (freer speaking task) (5-7 minutes) • SS will read statements about gender roles and explain why they agree or disagree during a freer speaking exercise.

T will give HO of gender role statements. T will ask them to read the statements and discuss in pairs. T will monitor and take notes for DEC.

Stage 3 ( vocabulary clarification) (8-10 minutes) • To provide "MFP" clarification of relationship idioms.

T will give a HO of idioms and definitions for them to match. SS will work alone and compare in pairs after. Answer key will be given on the WB. Students will then read the idioms in sentences. T will elicit meaning from SS and drill pronunciation.

Stage 4 (Story telling, semi-controlled task) (8-10 minutes) • To have SS create a dialogue as a whole class regarding a photo of a man and woman.

T will have a photo on WB and will ask SS tu create a dialogue between the two. SS will tell sentences to T and T will write the dialogue on the WB. Once dialogue completed, students will be drilled on pronunciation. T will then divide the class into two groups, one group will read the woman's part and the other the man's. T will remove non important words bit by bit and have SS repeat the dialogue until only the main words are left.

Stage 5 (freer speaking activity) (8-10 minutes) • To have students speak fluently answering questions that include relationship idoms.

T will divide class into 2 groups to balance out the weaker and stronger SS. T will give each group 8 relationship cards. SS will each take their turn picking a card, reading out loud the question and answering it. T will monitor and take notes to do DEC.

Stage 6 ( DEC) (3-5 minutes) • To provide DEC to SS and reclarify TL if needed.

T will write errors observed on the WB and have SS correct them.
