Procedure (38-48 minutes)
Ask: “When was your last holiday?” “Where did you go?” “Who did you go with?” Students discuss in pairs for 1–2 minutes. Brief whole-class feedback. Purpose: Prepares Ss for upcoming content, connects to topic, gets students talking
Give students a model postcard (simple, short): Hi Mum, Last week I went to Oaxaca and I had an amazing time. The weather was hot and sunny. I stayed in a small hotel near the beach, but I didn't like the room. I surfed every day and swam in the ocean. I also ate seafood at a local restaurant. It was delicious! See you soon, Jamahl Task them with reading for gist. Where did the writer go? What did they do? check answers in pairs then OCFB Purpose: Students practice reading for gist and getting the overall message of a piece of text
Ask students: "Is this postcard formal or informal?" "Who do we usually write postcards to?" Elicit short sentences Ask students to notice parts of the postcard that are numbered: greeting, opening sentence, past activities, closing sentence, signature Purpose: Students understand the structure and overall meaning before focusing on production Purpose: to develop awareness of tone and style
Provide a controlled task using the model postcard: Students underline verbs from the model text then sort them into regular and irregular on a table. task to be done in pairs. Then, students to complete a gap-fill activity individually and compare with a partner. Gap-fill activity using the same verbs, students sorted into regular and irregular: Yesterday I ___ (visit) the museum and ___ (eat) local food. Purpose: Ensure language is ready for the writing task
Ask students to write a postcard to a friend about their weekend or a holiday. Fill the gaps. Challenge them without a word bank initially, then provide if they struggle too much. Students write individually. Purpose: for students to practice writing a postcard using their own ideas
Students swap postcards. Students check the postcard to see if it has the following: past simple used? Greeting and closing included? 3 activities? easy to understand? Students encouraged to give friendly spoken feedback OCFB of errors observed in the lesson Purpose: develop editing skills and raise awareness of accuracy and clarity
