Main Aims

  • To provide gist and scan reading practice using a text about sales maddness around the world in the context of shopping

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of shopping

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T shows the definition of the word "money" for ss to guess it. After the word is revealed, ss answer the question: What do people spend the most money on in your country? Name 3 things. Then T explains what ss will learn in that lesson.

Pre-Reading/Listening (4-6 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Ss try to guess more words by reading the definitions and then do the following activity on page 28 Vocabulary, activity b. Then ss talk about the questions by answering the three of them.

Pre-Reading (4-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Ss watch a short video about the shopping madness and T elicits the meaning of the word "madness" T explains that ss will read a text titled "sales maddness around the world" T asks: Which countries do you think you will read about?

While-Reading/Listening #1 (5-7 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

T hands out the questions so that ss can answer while reading.

Post-Reading/Listening (15-20 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

T gets ss to sit in groups of 5 and asks "Prepare a short presentation about sales seasons in Turkey by answering the questions below". When do shops have sales in your country? When is the biggest sales season? What kinds of products do people buy in the sales? How is your country different from or similar to the ones in the text? Do people do strange things during sales? Ss present their ideas either by changing groups or in fornt of the whole class - they format will be optioanal.
