Reading Demo Lesson – Family & Friends 3 (Unit 15, Skills Time!)

Description

A reading-focused demo lesson based on an email about Bruno’s vacation. The plan includes pre-teaching key vocabulary, general and detailed comprehension tasks, controlled practice, pronunciation (optional), and a freer writing task where students reply to the email from Dan’s perspective.

Materials

Abc Audio recording for listening tasks (While Reading 1 & 2)
Abc Family and Friends 3 textbook (final unit)
Abc Visuals/images for pre-teaching vocabulary (weather, time expressions: tomorrow, this afternoon, ton
Abc Whiteboard / markers for elicitation and vocabulary display
Abc Slides for controlled practice (Bruno / Bruno’s sister sentences, True/False)
Abc projector or screen for displaying images and text

Main Aims

  • To provide detailed reading practice using a text about Bruno's Email in the context of Vacation

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a Guided Speaking in the context of Sights of Barcelona city

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Introduce topic with images related to weather; elicit prior knowledge and predictions.

Pre-Reading/Listening (7-8 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Pre-teach key vocabulary (target words + tricky words from text) using visuals and elicitation; check understanding.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (4-5 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Play audio; students listen and try to catch general idea without text.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (6-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Students follow along in the book while listening; then answer detailed comprehension questions in pairs.

Post-Reading/Listening (10-15 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

1. Controlled practice: students complete sentences (Bruno / Bruno’s sister) and True/False tasks. 2. Freer practice: students imagine being Dan and produce 4–5 sentences. Optional: read aloud for pronunciation.
