Be going to
Unit 3A level

Description

In this lesson my students are going to learn how to use “be going to” to talk about future plans, using the PPP method. The lesson begins with a short conversation about the teacher’s weekend plans, then followed by highlighting the new grammar on the whiteboard, clarification of MFP, controlled practice, and a free speaking activity where they discuss their future plans.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of “be going to” in the context of future plans.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy based speaking practice about future plans.

Procedure

Warmer/ Lead in (3-6 minutes) • To set the context.

The teacher starts by talking about their weekend plans using “be going to” and writing a few examples such as “I’m going to visit my friend" Then the teacher asks students: “What are you going to do this weekend?”. students try to answer the question and communicate.

Highlighting (3-5 minutes) • To draw students’ attention to TL

Teacher selects 3 student answers and writes them on the board. Then underlines "be" (am/is/are), going to, and the base verb, trying to draw the students attention to the structure.

Clarification (10-12 minutes) • To clarify MFP (Meaning, Form, Pronunciation)

First, to clarify the meaning, the teacher draws a simple timeline (NOW to FUTURE) and asks CCQs: “Is it the future?” (yes) “Is it a plan?” (Yes). To clarify form, the teacher writes on the board: S (subject) + be (am/is/are) + going to + base verb (swim, play etc...). Also writes negative + question forms. Lastly for pronunciation the teacher asks students to repeat(drilling) "I’m going to…"/ˈɡənə/ Students repeat chorally and individually.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare for meaningful practice

Students complete the gap fill activity from their SB – Unit A3 (Grammar section, page 130) individually for about 4 minutes. Then students compare their answers in pairs (2 minutes) and finally, answers are checked with the whole class.

Free Practice (10-12 minutes) • To provide student with free practice of the TL

Students work in groups of 3 or 4. They discuss their future plans (for the weekend) using “be going to” for about 7 minutes. After discussion, one student from each group shares their group’s plans with the class. Teacher gives delayed feedback if needed.
