Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of question tags in the context of questions that kids ask their parents

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in asking and answering questions in the context of making guesses about other SS
  • To provide gist and specific information listening practice using a text about answering the questions of kids

Procedure

Stage 1 (Lead in) (3-5 minutes) • To introduce the context of the lesson, make it interesting for the students

Arrange the SS in the groups of 3 (or pairs if there are not so many SS) and get them discuss the questions - How do you prefer to find the information - on the Internet, in books or by asking people? What does it depend on? What type of questions do children ask? Give examples.

Stage 2. Listening for a gist (3-5 minutes) • to develop listening for the gist skills

Set the context for the listening by showing a picture of a father and a son. - Here you can see a father (Jamieson) and a son (Dean), and these are the questions that Dean asked. I want you to listen to the questions and put them in the correct order. SS listen to the recording, order the questions and compare them with the partner. Show the answers on the board.

Stage 3 (Listen for detail) (5-7 minutes) • to practise listening for the specific information skills

- Now we will listen to some people answering these questions. Choose the suitable answer. SS work individually, then check with a partner. FB on the board

Stage 4 (Question tags) (7-10 minutes) • To clear up the MFP of the target grammar Question Tags

- Now look at the questions from the listening and complete the gaps with a suitable verb form. SS get a HO which they complete working individually, once they are ready, they check with the partner. Get the FB on the board (if there are early finishers, ask them to write the answers). Clear up the meaning and the form of the question tags, eliciting it from the SS; model and drill the pronunciation.

Stage 5 (practice) (7-10 minutes) • To provide some controlled practice for the SS to use the knowledge they got

Organize SS in pairs and give them cut ups of question tags; get the SS to match the beginnings with the endings. Peer check, show the answers of the board. If necessary, elicit the explanation from the SS. The second task - the SS should correct the mistakes in question tags. SS work individually, discuss with a partner. Get the FB on the board.

Stage 6 (Practice) (7-10 minutes) • To provide freer practice of question tags

SS receive a HO which they have to complete about the SS in the class. Once they've done it, get them walk around the class asking each other Questions tags and check their guesses about each other. Monitor, mark the errors and correct with the WC after the activity.
