Vocabulary about describing people lesson
Elementary level

Description

In this lesson students will use vocabulary to describe peoples appearance. They will use a reading text to learn the TL. Then the TL will be clarifiyed in a guided discovery. This will lead to a matching activity and then a freer practice to talk about celebrities.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide vocabulary about appearance and describing people in the context of celebrities

Subsidiary Aims

  • To present the TL through reading activities in the context of celebrities

Procedure

Stage 1 (Lead In) (2-3 minutes) • To generate interest in the context of the text

- Show SS a picture of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie on the WB - Ask SS if they know who they are - Show SS the question 'What do they look like?' - Ask SS to discuss in pairs for 1 min what things we could talk about when answering this question (ICQ: Are you working alone in pairs, How long will you talk for?) - Write some of the SS answers on the WB and error correct if needed

Stage 2 (Pre-teach vocabulary) (2-3 minutes) • To pre-teach vocabulary students will need to understand the text and complete the task

- Chest HO with pictures and definitions of useful vocabulary - Tell SS they will match the picture to the word in pairs - SS have 1 min to match the picture to the word (ICQ: Will you work on your own? How long do you have?) - Tell SS to turn over page for the AK and pair check - Monitor for any problems and error correct if needed

Stage 3 (Reading for gist) (2-3 minutes) • To practice reading for gist to find the main idea of the text

- Put SS in pairs A-F - Chest HO with information on the appearance of 6 famous people - Tell SS they will read their section (A-F) for 30 seconds individually - SS will decide if the person is a man or woman (ICQ: Are you reading fast or slowly? Are you reading all the boxes?) - SS pair check their answers - Show HO on WB and write the SS ideas next to the sections

Stage 4 (Highlighting target language) (8-10 minutes) • To clarify meaning, form and pronunciation so learners understand it

- Chest HO at the front of the class to show the SS that they will do a matching task - SS will match the word in bold in the sentence with the meaning in the next column individually for 3 mins (ICQ: Will you work in pairs? How long will you work for? Demo one example for the SS) - Pair check the answers - Go through the answers with the SS then show them the AK - SS answer the Q about what type of words they think the are (adjectves) - Show TL on the board and drill pronunciation correcting any errors

Stage 5 (Clarifying target language) (15-20 minutes) • To highlight TL so students focus on it

- SS will read their text again individually for 2 mins and underline any words they think describe appearance (ICQ: Will you underline words about looks?) - SS pair check the words they underlined - Put SS in a larger group (1 A-F) the SS will share the words the underlined with the rest of their group (ICQ: Will you talk about all the parts? Will you underline the words the other SS tell you?) - Put HO on the WB and SS come and underline the words that they have shared with their groups - Give FB to the WC to see if they have found the correct words - SS will return to their pairs - Tell SS there are 6 pictures around the class and that they will try to match the texts to the pictures. Tell them to look at all the pictures to be sure (ICQ: Will you choose more than 1 picture? Will you check all the pictures?) - SS come to the WB to write the name or number of the person they think was in the description - Check answers with the class

Stage 6 (Language practice) (8-10 minutes) • To provide oral practice to use the language productively

- Ask students to write notes about the appearance of a famous celebrity in Turkey (Not the ones they have seen) for 2 mins (ICQ: Will you write about their life?) - Tell students they will talk to a partner about the person they written about for 1 min then the other person will guess who it is, then they will switch who is speaking. (ICQ: Will you talk about a person we have seen on the walls? Will you guess the name of the person?) - Error correct any problems on the WB after the first SS have talked to each other - SS will talk to more partners about their celebrities - Ask SS who guessed the most correctly to decide who gave the best description
